Home > Prohibition of the Use of Reused OR Recycled Oil Tins

In India, the reuse of tin containers for packaging food, including edible oils, is prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations 2018 due to significant health risks like chemical reactions, rust formation, and premature food spoilage. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) actively enforces this ban by issuing notices to food business operators and conducting raids to ensure only new tins are used for packaging food items.

Used oil tins can pose serious health and environmental risks. They may contain harmful residues. When reused, these residues could contaminate food or other products. This is a risk we can’t afford to take.

Why the Prohibition Exists?

Health Hazards:

Reusing tins can lead to contamination of food with harmful substances from previous contents or the metal itself.

Food Safety:

The risk of chemical reactions and rust formation when old tins come into contact with food poses a serious threat to public health.

Contamination and Spoilage:

Old tins may not be cleaned adequately, leading to premature spoilage and other foodborne illnesses.

Regulatory Action and Enforcement:

FSSAI Regulations:

The FSSAI has explicitly stated that tin containers, once used, cannot be re-used for packaging any food item or substance.

Regulatory Notices:

The FSSAI and state food authorities, such as the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA), regularly issue notices to manufacturers and re-packers to enforce this ban.

Penalties:

Food business operators found violating these regulations risk penal action under relevant food safety laws.

What this means for Food Businesses?

Mandatory New Packaging:

Food businesses must use new, unused tin containers for packaging edible oils and other food products.

Responsibility for Compliance:

Food business operators are responsible for ensuring their packaging practices comply with FSSAI regulations to prevent food safety hazards.

In summary, using reused or recycled oil tins can endanger health and environment. The prohibition is there to protect us. It’s critical we remain aware of this law.
